Study: Top schools in tournament aren’t tops in classroom

North Carolina was the only school among the four No. 1 seeds in the NCAA men’s tournament to graduate at least 50 percent of its players.

A report released Monday found 86 percent of Tar Heels men’s players earned diplomas during a six-year period. The other top seeds were far worse: 45 percent at Kansas and 40 percent at UCLA and Memphis.

The study was conducted by Richard Lapchick, head of the University of Central Florida’s Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport. It evaluated four different freshman classes for a period beginning in 1997-98 and ending with 2000-01. Though the players evaluated are no longer on campus, the report intends to provide a snapshot of academic trends.

Lapchick’s primary concern was the disparity between black and white players. Thirty-three schools graduated at least 70 percent of their white men’s basketball players; only 19 graduated that many black players. At least 50 percent of white players earned degrees at 45 schools, but black athletes had that much success at only 36 schools.

But the study found that the achievement gap was shrinking. At 34 percent of tournament-bound teams there was a 30-point or greater difference in graduation success between black and white players, down from 49 percent last year. Black players continued to succeed in higher rates than black nonathletes.

“Higher education’s greatest failure is the persistent gap between African-American and white basketball student-athletes in particular, and students in general,” Lapchick wrote. “The good news there is that the gaps are narrowing slightly.”

According to NCAA data, graduation rates for black men’s basketball players have improved 14 percent overall since 1984.

“We’ve seen some real improvement over time,” NCAA spokesman Erik Christianson said. “There’s always room for more improvement, but we’re pleased with the progress.”

The NCAA tournament field is 65 teams, but not all could be included in the analysis. Cornell, like other Ivy League schools, doesn’t report graduation rates. Gonzaga had no black players and 10 schools had no white athletes.

Two of the No. 2 seeds, Tennessee and Texas, graduated only 33 percent of their players for the period studied. The other second seeds, Georgetown and Duke, had success rates of 82 percent and 67 percent, respectively.

If the Final Four were determined academically, it would be Western Kentucky (100 percent graduation success), Butler (92 percent), Notre Dame (91 percent) and Purdue (91 percent). Xavier, a No. 3 seed, was close behind with a 90 percent success rate.

House staff drafts letter that could be sent to Justice about Clemens

WASHINGTON (AP)—A draft letter asking the Justice Department to investigate whether Roger Clemens made false statements to Congress has been written by House staffers, The New York Times reported on its Web site Monday. The chief of staff for committee chairman Henry Waxman said no decision has been made on whether to ask for a criminal investigation.

The newspaper report cited three unidentified lawyers familiar with the matter.

The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform held the Feb. 13 hearing at which personal trainer Brian McNamee repeated his allegations that he injected Clemens with steroids and human growth hormone—and Clemens repeated his denials. Both men spoke under oath during depositions and at the hearing.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -- Novak Djokovic withstood the expected barrage from upstart Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the first set, then rallied to win the Australian Open for his first Grand Slam title.

Djokovic fended off the Muhammad Ali lookalike 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (2) in the final on Sunday night, ending a sequence of 11 straight majors won by either Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal since Marat Safin's victory in 2005.

Djokovic had not lost a set in six matches leading into the final, including his semifinal win over two-time defending champion Federer. But with unseeded Tsonga coming out swinging like he did in his straight-sets upset over No. 2 Nadal in the semifinals and three other top 14 players, that streak came to a sudden end.

The third-ranked Djokovic rebounded in the second and third sets, and after saving a crucial breakpoint in the fourth, dominated the tiebreaker to clinch his first major at his 13th attempt.

Superbowl XLII : Giants, Patriots, the real match ups

The real match up for the Superbowl appears to be basic.

1. Can Kevin Gilbride (picture), first full season Giants’ offensive coordinator, craft an offensive plan that is good enough to beat the Pats Bill Belichick.

2. Can Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo craft a defensive plan to stop the Pats offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

Gilbride has been less than creative this season. Very often the Giant offensive play calls seem predictable. (e.g., always running off tackle on first down, etc). The offensive play calls have also been ultra conservative at times, too much so in certain situations. Gilbride will need more than predictable play calls to beat one of the best defensive coordinators in the league, Bill Belichick. If the Giants offense is in "2nd or 3rd down and 8 yards" the whole game, they don't stand a chance. Eli will also need much better play action and fakes to freeze/outsmart the Patriot Linebacker core. A better running mix with Bradshaw is critical. Maybe Jacobs and Bradshaw in the same set? More screens to Bradshaw?, etc Lastly, the Giants receivers have to catch the ball ( wink wink Toomer)

Spagnuolo has a solid defense. The patch-works giants secondary has come up big in past games and will need to come up even bigger to beat the Patriots. Antonio Pierce ( and the other Giant linebackers too) will have to play harder, and READ better, to stop the Patriots. Giving the Patriots "five yards a carry" will not cut it. Clearly the Giants will have to apply pass pressure to Brady to win...period . Brady will carve up the Giants with passes like a Thanksgiving turkey if they give him time. The Giants have the weapons, carefully disguised blitz packages will be paramount. There is no question, the Patriots have an unbelievable offense. Its also true that the Giants defense has been playing inspired and did preview their effectiveness in the last game of the regular seasons against the Patriots. But, the Patriots have now seen this.. Spagnuolo will need to prepare for that too.

Giant blown coverage, bad special teams, unblocked blitz, off sides, running back fumbles, predictable offensive plays, pass interference,etc.. etc..etc. All play into Belichick's master plan. New England is not undefeated by accident :), to beat the best, each Giant has to play above their personal best, play each down like its their last chance to win and maintain impeccable discipline. Tall order, but doable.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- After handing New England a huge gift, the San Diego Chargers believe it's time to give the unbeaten Patriots something else: a challenge.

And, oh yeah, a loss.

By stunning Peyton Manning and the defending champion Colts 28-24 on Sunday, undermanned San Diego removed New England's biggest road block to the Super Bowl. Not that the Chargers are intimidated by facing the 17-0 Patriots in the AFC title game next weekend.

Roger Clemens open to lie-detector test, shocked close friend Andy Pettitte took HGH

NEW YORK (AP) -- Sounding indignant and defiant in his first interview since his former personal trainer accused him of using steroids, Roger Clemens seemed to set up a confrontation with Brian McNamee in front of Congress if the pair testify under oath at a Jan. 16 hearing.

Clemens said during a segment broadcast on CBS's "60 Minutes" Sunday night that he might be willing to take a lie-detector test and was "shocked" close friend Andy Pettitte used human growth hormone. He said -- again -- that he probably will retire.

The seven-time Cy Young Award winner, a fiery look in his eyes and stubble on his face, told CBS's Mike Wallace that he would have spoken with baseball drug investigator George Mitchell had he been aware McNamee accused him of using steroids and HGH.

Clemens, the most prominent player implicated in last month's Mitchell Report, steadfastly maintained his innocence and called McNamee's allegations "totally false."

"If he's doing that to me, I should have a third ear coming out of my forehead. I should be pulling tractors with my teeth," said Clemens, who wore a lavender button-down shirt during the interview, taped Dec. 28 at his home in Katy, Texas.

MOST VICTORIES IN A SEASON - New England became the first team in NFL history to win 16 games in a regular season, which expanded its schedule by two games in 1978. The 2004 Steelers, 1998 Vikings, 1985 Bears, and 1984 49ers all posted 15 wins.

MOST TOUCHDOWN PASSES IN A SEASON - Tom Brady threw two TD passes to finish the season with 50, breaking the mark of 49 set by Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning in 2004.

Senator George Mitchell's Report on the Steroid Era

NEW YORK (AP) -- Roger Clemens, Miguel Tejada and Andy Pettitte were named in the long-awaited Mitchell Report on Thursday, an All-Star roster linked to steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs that put a question mark -- if not an asterisk -- next to some of baseball's biggest moments.

Barry Bonds, already under indictment on charges of lying to a federal grand jury about steroids, also showed up in baseball's most infamous lineup since the Black Sox scandal.

The report culminated a 20-month investigation by former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell, hired by commissioner Bud Selig to examine the Steroids Era.

It was uncertain whether the report would result in any penalties or suspensions.

Several stars named in the report could pay the price in Cooperstown, much the way Mark McGwire was kept out of the Hall of Fame this year merely because of steroids suspicion.

"Former commissioner Fay Vincent told me that the problem of performance-enhancing substances may be the most serious challenge that baseball has faced since the 1919 Black Sox scandal," Mitchell said in the 409-page report.

"The illegal use of anabolic steroids and similar substances, in Vincent's view, is 'cheating of the worst sort.' He believes that it is imperative for Major League Baseball to 'capture the moral high ground' on the issue and, by words and deeds, make it clear that baseball will not tolerate the use of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs."

"We identify some of the players who were caught up in this drive to gain a competitive advantage," the report said. "Other investigations will no doubt turn up more names and fill in more details, but that is unlikely to significantly alter the description of baseball's `steroids era' as set forth in this report."

It is important to note the Mitchell's main informants were involved with the Yankee and Mets organizations. As a result it is entirely possible that a good number of other players using steroids (past/present) on other MLB teams may have gone undetected in the investigation. Some players and their representation are already casting doubt on the integrity of the informants (gutter rat comments, etc). The fact that this was an FBI run investigation shouldn't be forgotten. The FBI does investigate things for a living :) and I am sure procedural diligence was maintained.

Today marks official "verdict and conviction" of Major League Baseball related to steroid use. Guilty. Everything after this..is aftermath. Are baseball fans surprised? Yes and no. Some of the names mentioned in the report maybe a surprise, but in general no.

This report also helps the MLB to get this "steroid moose on the table" once and for all and stops all the years of allegations, rumors and speculation that has plagued baseball. Hopefully this gives them a new "square one" to build from after all the "should have, could have , would have" concludes with the league, owners and players union.

Performance enhancing drugs and tests to stop them are part of the sports world. Players in all sports are always looking for an "edge". Even today there isn't a "sanctioned" test for Human Growth Hormone (HGH) and for each test there is a new "designer drug" to help avoid it.

The worst is yet to come. Banter about MVP's, records, Cy Young and championship misappropriations have yet to start. This will make the Pete Rose betting scandal and Black Sox episodes look trivial by comparison. Merchandise deals and endorsement contracts for those names mentioned could be effected. Who knows what Bud Selig will do ( he didn't promise no fallout).

Here is what I do know today, that the young boys and girls in America playing baseball in the school yards of this nation were robbed. Robbed of an ideal, an ethic of fair play and in some cases a hero. They are the countless faceless victims here.

Miami Dolphins Beat the New England Patriots Dec 23, 2007

Imagine that headline! Is the perfect storm brewing? The game between the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots on Dec. 23, could very well match a 14-0 team (Pats)with an 0-14 one (phins).

The facts..The Dolphins (0-13) are off to the third-worst start to a season in NFL history, joining Oakland (1962) and Indianapolis (1986). Miami, which hosts Baltimore next weekend, is one loss short of matching the 0-14 record set by Tampa Bay, as an expansion team in 1976, and New Orleans in 1980. Miami has lost 16 straight dating to last season, matching the eighth longest streak in NFL history.

The Patriots can become the first team since the 1972 Dolphins to finish a regular season undefeated; those Dolphins were 14-0, then won three postseason games for the NFL's only perfect season.

The fiction : The perfect storm might be brewing for the Dolphins to upset the Patriots on Dec 23rd! Granted, it defies all logic, all reason and all common sense. But "Any given Sunday" was said for a reason.

To the Miami Dolphins : Considering you have disappointed all your fan faithful this season, have ALL not justified your NFL salaries and need to stop hiding behind excuses about "new" coaches being to blame... MAN up, grow a pair of phins and beat the Patriots on December 23rd 2007. As the immortal Vince Lombardi once said "The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will." He also said "Success demands singleness of purpose" and you have that purpose...beat the Patriots on December 23rd 2007.

Kuhn, O'Malley and 3 others elected to Baseball Hall of Fame; Marvin Miller snubbed

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- At last, Bowie Kuhn beat Marvin Miller at something.

The late commissioner was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on Monday while Miller was rejected by a revamped Veterans Committee stacked with those he regularly opposed -- and beat -- in arbitration and bargaining sessions that altered the history of the game.

"Bowie was a close friend and a respected leader who served as commissioner during an important period in history, amid a time of change," commissioner Bud Selig said, adding: "I was surprised that Marvin Miller did not receive the required support given his important impact on the game."

Former Dodgers owner Walter O'Malley, managers Dick Williams and Billy Southworth and ex-Pirates owner Barney Dreyfuss also were elected.

Manager Whitey Herzog and umpire Doug Harvey each missed induction by a single vote.

Miller's reaction ... "I think it was rigged, but not to keep me out. It was rigged to bring some of these (people) in. It's not a pretty picture," Miller said by telephone after being informed of the results by The Associated Press. "It's demeaning, the whole thing, and I don't mean just to me. It's demeaning to the Hall and demeaning to the people in it."

To understand Miller's reaction, you need to know that the Hall of Fame consists of panel three separate panels -- one for players, one for managers and umpires and one for executives and pioneers, leaving Miller's fortunes largely in the hands of groups he once fought in collective bargaining and the courts. Let me explain a bit more. From 1964-1984 Miller was leading the players to more lucrative and revolutionary gains, taking the average salary from $19,000 to $241,000 and pitching a virtual shutout against the owners when he went head-to-head.

Hall chairman Jane Forbes Clark defended the process. "There was no concerted effort other than to have very qualified committee members evaluate very qualified candidates," she said. "There was a very open and frank discussion about each of the candidates. Everyone on that committee knows Marvin and respects what he did for the game. And that showed in the discussions."

Packers expect Favre to recover in time to keep streak alive

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Packers quarterback Brett Favre is expected to start against the Oakland Raiders on Dec. 9 and keep alive his record streak for consecutive starts.

"Just to quote the medical staff, his streak is not in danger. He'll be OK," coach Mike McCarthy said Friday, the day after Favre was knocked out of the Packers' 37-27 loss at Dallas with elbow and shoulder injuries.

The streak, which dates to 1992, stands at 249 games (269 including playoffs) and is a league record for quarterbacks.

The 38-year-old Favre was at Lambeau Field on Friday for treatment of a bruised right elbow. He also aggravated a left shoulder separation, which he first injured 15 years ago, on a hit by blitzing Dallas cornerback Nate Jones in the second quarter.

McCarthy said the medical staff didn't indicate that Favre had nerve damage in his throwing elbow, which had been feared after the game.

New England clinches playoff berth thanks to Buffalo loss

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -- The New England Patriots clinched the AFC East title even before they played the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night.

Buffalo's 36-14 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars meant New England has won the division for the fifth consecutive year. The Patriots are the fourth team since 1978 to clinch a division title during the weekend of their 11th game, joining the 1985 Chicago Bears, the '97 San Francisco 49ers, and the 2004 Eagles.

The Patriots entered Sunday night's game with a 10-0 record.

NHL-worst Capitals fire coach Hanlon, promote Boudreau from AHL

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) -- Glen Hanlon was fired as coach of the NHL-worst Washington Capitals on Thursday, with the team off to its slowest start in 26 years.

Hanlon, in his fourth season at the helm, was told of the decision a day after loud boos and chants of "Fire Hanlon!" echoed through the arena during a 5-1 home loss to the Atlanta Thrashers, Washington's fifth consecutive defeat.

Alex Rodriguez wins 3rd AL Most Valuable Player Award

NEW YORK (AP) -- Alex Rodriguez is headed back to the New York Yankees as the American League's Most Valuable Player. A-Rod won his third AL MVP award Monday, easily defeating Detroit's Magglio Ordonez. Rodriguez had 26 first-place votes and 382 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Ordonez had two firsts and 258 points, and was followed by the Angels' Vladimir Guerrero (203) and Boston's David Ortiz (177).

The only two first-place votes that didn't go to Rodriguez were from Tom Gage of The Detroit News and Jim Hawkins of The Oakland Press in Pontiac, Mich.

Rodriguez became just the ninth player to win the MVP three or more times. Bonds holds the record with seven, and Yogi Berra, Roy Campanella, Joe DiMaggio, Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Mantle, Stan Musial and Mike Schmidt won three apiece.

Bonds indicted on federal charges

Former San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds has been indicted by a federal grand jury seated in San Francisco on four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice for allegedly lying when he said he did not use performance-enhancing drugs in testimony given before another grand jury nearly four years ago.

The indictments were unsealed on Thursday against Bonds, who holds Major League Baseball's all-time record with 762 home runs, and is another tentacle of the case brought against employees and the founder of the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative.

Bonds has been ordered to appear in court on Dec. 7, the U.S. Justice Dept. announced.

San Diego Padres ace Jake Peavy wins NL Cy Young Award in unanimous vote

NBA:Wade returns to Heat for game against Sonics

Miami's All-Star guard, Dwyane Wade recovered from offseason shoulder and knee surgeries, played for the first time this season Wednesday night, but the Heat still lost, 104-95 to the previously winless Seattle SuperSonics.

Wade scored 15 points in 25 minutes on 5-for-9 shooting for Miami (1-7), which is 0-4 at home for the second time in franchise history.

Wade entered the game with 4:49 left in the first quarter, replacing Penny Hardaway. His home crowd began shouting as soon as Wade removed his warm-ups, and stood and gave a long cheer when he took the floor.

NFL: Colts put Freeney on injured reserve, ending season

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Dwight Freeneys' season is over, and now Simeon Rice has a chance to start anew in Indianapolis.

Freeney, the three-time Pro Bowl defensive end and highest-paid defender in the league, was placed on injured reserve Wednesday by the Colts. He's scheduled to undergo surgery later this week or early next week on his injured left foot.

The blow is potentially devastating to Indianapolis, which has already been depleted by injuries. Seven starters missed Sunday's game in San Diego, and Indianapolis lost four more starters, including Freeney, during the game.

NFL reinstates Ricky Williams; RB will meet with Miami

Fired-Up Pierce Helps Keep Celtics Unbeaten

Paul Pierce shook off a hard foul, then helped the Boston Celtics surge past the Indiana Pacers.

Jamaal Tinsley hacked Pierce on a drive to the basket late in the second quarter, and Pierce responded by scoring 13 of his 31 points in a three-minute span that broke things open in the Celtics’ 101-86 victory last night in Indianapolis.

Boston remained unbeaten (6-0) and matched its best start since the 1987-88 season.

Operation Raw Deal might have found some victims: the Atlanta Falcons and Dallas Cowboys. The international steroids sting captured a slew of steroid creators and dealers around the world. Tuesday a man in Texas pled guilty to a federal charge of conspiring to distribute steroids. In the process, he says he’s had connections with some players from the Cowboys and Falcons.
